Hello, I’m Malou — a South African freelance writer and visual artist based in the Cape.
The Book of Malou is an online portfolio and central repository for my explorations in illustration and design.
My work is mainly inspired by the natural world and I like to produce bold, minimalist artwork using traditional techniques and materials — particularly ink, printmaking, or other illustration processes that leave the maker’s mark.
I illustrate and create art prints and surface pattern designs from my studio on an organic farm in the Western Cape. And many of the themes and motifs appearing in my work are often both seasonal and regional.
The Book of Malou launched in July 2023, but many years ago I had a textile design and printmaking business. Everything was hand-printed on either cotton or linen fabric and the process was both satisfying and rewarding. But it was also quite time-consuming: sourcing raw materials and shipping from South Africa was not without its challenges back then.
These days, however, print-on-demand offers many new possibilities for artists. So now I’m building — or re-building — my online art business from scratch. I’m also figuring out my art style and exploring new skills and techniques – such as editorial illustration which has been an uncharted interest for some time.
